Despite being able to delete History, certain web pages
still appear in the Address Bar (in an auto-complete type
of way) These addresses are not in my favourites.
How do I get rid of them?

Rob,
Download DelTypedURL.inf from http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/download.htm
or check the TypedURLs key in the registry according to this article:
157729 - How to Clear the History Entries in Internet Explorer:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q157729

If these entries aren't coming from the TypedURLs key, they're coming from
the History\index.dat file. See: How To Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm#WinME for instructions regarding
deletion of the History folder.

Thanks Don,
Unfortunately this doesn't seem to have worked. Have gone
through the registry, and deleted all history (even ran
HistoryKill and AdAware) yet it still persists.
I'm using XP and IE 6.

Can't find any reference to the URL in documents and
settings.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rob,
Delete the TIF and History folders for your user account/profile:
- - -
From http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
Log on as Administrator and delete the desired <username> folder(s).
(or log on as another user that has Administrator privileges) and reboot.
Example
"C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files"
Note: where "username" is the account or profile that you suspect is
corrupt.
- - -
And...
Delete the History folder and it's index.dat file at, for example:
"C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\History"

I want delete the History of site that I have accessed in
the past days/weeks/months. The list is accessed by
entering CNTRL H. Do you how I can delete ALL the
addresses simultaneously -- one delete entry? Or, is there
a setting somewhere?

An assumed source of other URLs are the ones associated
with any AutoComplete form and password data. Have you tried
clearing both and disabling that feature before clearing History?

You can prove that clearing History still constructs some "auto-Visited:"
entries from some sources such as Favorites and AutoComplete data
by examining the History.IE5\index.dat file after clearing History.

In order to avoid any possible interference I suggest that you close
all applications, especially IE and your security programs before
clearing History. To avoid restarting IE to do that you can start
the Internet Properties tool by Run... (e.g. press Win-R and enter
control inetcpl.cpl

After the Clear History operation open a command window and enter
the following commands:
cd /d %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\History\History.IE5
find /i "Visited:" index.dat

If you still see some of the problem URLs in the resulting display
you may have to use the delete file technique that Mike Burgess
suggests. I suspect that that means you should not retry the
IE Clear History procedure or those entries would be rebuilt.

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

AutoSuggest also seems to include entries from various MRU lists.
E.g. you would probably see any URLs which you launched from the
Run... dialog. Mike has some tools for clearing those too.

From your post it is hard to tell exactly what you ahve
tried so far. Your first step should be to click Tools,
then Internet Options, then click the button to "Clear
History" and finally click OK.

If you are using AOL, you may need additionally to click
on AOL's "settings" menu, then "preferences", then
Internet Properties" and click the Clear History button
you find there.

If that doesn't work on the Ctrl/N History list, you may
need to delete the Histtory folder itself (an advanced
task that requires restarting in DOS mode.) There are
instructions for this that you can find in the replies to
other post lie yours. Search this forum for "History"
related posts.
If you still see old sites in the address bar, especially
as you begin typing there, you need to disable
AutoComplete in addition to deleting the History folder as
mentioned above.
