Download Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy to a different computer,
copy to a flash drive, then place the flash drive into the affected computer.
Copy to hard disk and run from there. See if that cleans it up enough to turn
off System Restore. Reboot the computer and see if you can connect to the
internet. Visit Elephantboycomputers.com and follow the malware removal
instructions there. When the machine is cleaned up then turn System Restore
back on.

Mark's advice may or may not work--it depends on the infestation. If you
find you cannot install or run any malware or A/V programs, you will need to
slave up the infected hard drive to another clean computer and use its A/V
and malware programs to partially clean the infected drive. This method
will not clean the registry entries but it should get rid of enough files
that you can run the malware programs on your PC.

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2. [WinXP ONLY!! =>] Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

or other appropriate forums.**

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Try that Malwarebytes first.

Some clever malwares will infect you and then fix it so you can't do a
System Restore.

Your topic is cannot download from m/s. If m/s means Microsoft you
will often/always have difficulties on their download site
(updates, etc.) unless you use their swell Internet Explorer product.
So if you are using something like Firefox to download from Microsoft,
you need to communicate with their download site using IE usually
(reading stuff is fine with Firefox).
