When trying to add pictures to a photo album in Frontpage 2003 the program
"stalls" when trying to create the thumbail. The dialog box pops up and the
progress bar fills up and then it just sits there: I have to use the red "x"
to close the dialog box.

As so many have already learned it is best not to use this 'faulty' feature
in FP. Start here:

Elanor....that J Ablbum is really nice. Any feel for how many people would
have the Java enabled to be able to see these? I for one did not and had to
download the java program.

From the JAlbum FAQ: http://jalbum.net/faq.jsp#3

Do I need Java to view albums?
No, only to generate them. JAlbum usually generates plain html web albums
so any modern browser will do for viewing albums
