Cannot create a CNAME that points to a Win2003 server

I have created and alias that points to my new Windows 2003 server. In the
future I want users to go to the alias instead of the server name in case it
changes again sometime in the future.

I add a CNAME in DNS and created a WINS entry for it. I can ping it and the
nslookup command resovles it to the correct IP of my server. But when I
attempt to connect to any shares using the alias I get "you were not
connected because a duplicate name exists on the network."

Any suggestions?
