Cannot connect to wireless network

I am using a D-Link ExtremeG (802.11g) wireless router
which works well with a wired connection. My adapter is a
802.11b SMC USB adapter that I have connected to a windows
XP machine. XP can see the wireless network (I get
the 'one or more wireless networks are available message
in the notification area) but xp doesn't seem to be able
to connect to the network.
I have tried changing the router and adapter settings so
that they match, no luck there.

Any ideas?

Is the D-Link router configured for performance G only as opposed to mixed b
and g mode? (and are you running the latest firmware?)
Have you configured a WEP key in both the router and the SMC? (and is the
SMC set for infrastructure?)
802.1x authentication should be UNmarked

The D-Link router supports b, there is no setting to allow
only one or the other, so i guess it does it out of the
box.
I confirmed that the firmware is the latest version. I
have currently disabled WEP (until I get the issue
resolved).
How do I set the SMC for infrastructure? - I assumed that
if I don't check the adhoc network checkbox in properties,
it is infrastructure.

Did you set the SMC to connect to infrastructure only and unmark to
automatically connect to non preferred networks? This is in the advanced
wireless properties window.

You didn't answer the queston on unchecking 802.1x authentication.

I have set the SMC to infrastructure only and unmarked the
automatically connect to non preferred networks box. The
802.1x authentication is disabled because data encryption
is disabled. Tech Support for SMC asked me to download
patches for XP SP1 which I did. Still no luck - I can see
tthe SSID in the available network list but after i click
connect, the icon message still reads 'wireless connection
unavailable'.

Thanks for your continuing help Barbara.

If you downloaded 815485, you would experience what you are describing
unless you enableWEP.
Are there other wireless networks shown in the available list?

There are no other wireless networks in the list.
What is 815485? Will the connection work only if WEP is
enabled?

815485 is an update from Windows Update for WPA. You posted that SMC had you
download some updates but you didn't specify what they were. For others that
have downloaded and installed 815485, they have not been able to connect
without WEP.

Try setting the Wireless Zero Configuraton Service to
either "enable" or "automatic" and reboot.

Click Start
Right Click "My Computer"
Select "manage"
Select "Services and Applications"
Click "Services"
Scroll down to "Wireless Zero Configuraton" and click
Set "Startup Type" to automatic and reboot.

Let me know if this works for you.

Regards
Harry
