Hi to all,

I am in desparate need to resolve this problem and would appreciate
any help.

My laptop has been infected and does not allow me to run the symantec
antivirus software. What is worse now is that I cannot even connect to
the internet to run the online scans.

I have windows ME on my laptop. The screen has gone all fuzzy and it
seems that any new executable that is installed seems to get infected
(access violations are produced - I tried to install my CD writer on
it so that I could back up important files but I was prevented from
doing that).

Is there any way I can get a scan (i.e. via dos etc) and clean my
machine?

Regards
Steven.

Ps. The local computer shop says that I can clean the machine for
about 200 US dollars which seems a bit high.

I hope your laptop has a floppy drive. See my web site for the F-Pup
download. Download and run it on a clean Win 9X/ME PC. It will d/l
F-Prot for DOS and update it. You'll then see an option to create a
set of emergency disks (the boot disk plus two av disks). Cold boot
the laptop with the special boot disk inserted, and then follow the
on-screen instructions.

Try running Stinger in safe mode. You can download Stinger to floppy, on a
clean PC, from http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe It's
a self contained cleaner for about 40 of the most common viruses and malware.

Thanks for the advise.

As soon as I run any exectuable I get an error dialog box saying that
the executable cannot be found. This happens even when I click on it.

Will stinger.exe still work?

Thanks.

Hi,

The problem is I cannot get access to another windows ME machine. Is
there another way I can create emergency disks?

Thanks.

Doesn't have to be ME. Can be '95 or '98.

<snip> (arriving late to the party)

Some viruses screw up running .exe files, however if you rename the file
to .com it will then run.

Ah, Information. A good, too valuable these days, to give it away, just
so, at no cost.
