I have three computers: a PC running on Win 98SE, a Mac
G4 OSX, and a PC running on Win XP Pro.
Three days ago, my cable internet connection was running
well. Suddenly, the cable went out, and a technician from
the cable company came in. He said that our cable modem
was too old and that we needed a new one plus a router.
The new Motorola cable modem has been installed along with
the router.
Problem: 2 out of 3 of the computers work. The computer
that does not work is the one running on Win XP. After
calling the Router, Modem, Computer and Cable companies.
We know the following:
The router is okay and so is the modem. The cable
connection is okay, because my other two computers work.
I have not used the XP computer in a week, and therefore I
have not installed any programs. The only different thing
is that I have a new modem and router.
I still cannot connect with the internet on that computer!
I have disabled the firewall on the computer, uninstalled
and reinstalled the ethernet card driver, verified the
integrity of the hardware by tracing it, checked, released
and renewed the ip address using the ipconfig command,
reset the TCP/IP protocol, etc.
I have even eliminated the router and have tried to hook
this single computer to the modem all by itself.
I have even spent 8 hours on the phone with a
dozen "technical support" people from the various
companies.
Nothing works.
Any suggestions out there? Should I take a shotgun and
shoot the computer?
Please help.
Regards, Lupe
