Hello
I have XP home on a less than 2 yr old E-machine
For the last three or four days, I have not been able to
connect to the
internet at least at night-my daughter says she has had no
problem during
the day yesterday and Tuesday. I have contacted DSL
provider three days in
a row-Verizon-Microsoft-E-machines and the vendor who sold
me a three year
warrantee but will charge me to bring it in if it is a
software problem-
The problem is when i click on IE or MSN8 it takes a long
time for the home
page to come up and when it does it only shows the top
tool bars and either
a blank bottom page or the error message:" this page
cannot be displayed."
Verizon claims that their end is fine and they have been
very helpful as far
as having me go through different protocols through cmd
and also change
settings on the internet options and rebooting anpluging
etc. to try and
solve the problem-
Microsoft told me to Restore system
The vendor told me to uninstall the DSL program and
reinstall
I've claeaned the pc to the bear bones/defrag/etc.
Still to no avail
Any other suggestions?

Thank You
Doug

Create a new user account for yourself. Install nothing extra except your
DSL connection. Give it a try. If it works okay here, go back to your
regular account and check your startup items (start> run> msconfig) and
check the system with a program such as AdAware.

Thank you for your reply-I will try anything right now-I
spent over an hour last night with Verizon trying many
things-expecially deciding to uninstall firewalls and it
helped a little- like the pages came on but extremely slow
even more than dial-up- we checked the pings and all kinds
of technical things and everything checked out fine- but
only minor improvement

I had similar trouble with my DSL when I first got the service. It ended up
that I was pretty far from the phone company. Knocking my speed down one
service level gave me a steady connection. Download speeds are a little
slower than what I wanted but they're still a heck of a lot better than
dial up.

Also had the modem replaced. The first one was faulty and would
periodically become as slow as molasses or fail to connect at all. Between
the new modem and the drop in speed, things have been holding steady for
over 6 months.
