Please help
Connected to home network through D-link router. One host pc sharing
Broadband Internet connection. All 3 pcs and 3 laptops have XP and can
access the internet.
All can find other pcs on the network by way of 'search for other computers'
although not 'My network connections', link, But we can all ping each other
and find each other to share and map drives, so not too bothered.

Got a laptop Higrade running Win XP that I've added to the network. Again
can ping others and be pinged and share files But the problem is it can not
access the internet. IE opens with "The Page cannot be displayed" senario.
Saw a thread in the IE6 newsgroup (2nd Oct "IE 6 cannot find any server"
from JMichener)
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q318378
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q814510)
and tried everything there. But still nothing.

The IP address has to be specified on this laptop, because if obtained
automatically it chooses something totally off. But of course it's in line
with the rest. i.e 192.168.0.X
I don't know what else to add.

Someone said they had the same problem and had to re-format but that's so
drastic! Everything else works fine.
Thanks for any help on this.
J

If you manually assign an IP address, you must also assign a default gateway
and DNS server address. Are you sure these are correct? Can you ping them?

Yup, assigned the gateway. And I can ping all of them, there and back. But
if I have it like the others, to obtain automatically, it doesn't.
No DNS tho'. don't know what to put there.

That's the problem - you need to specify a primary DNS server. Try using
the same IP as the default gateway and reboot. If that doesn't work, try
the IP address of the ISP's DNS server.

Thank you sooooooooooooooooo much. I'm so thrilled.
I downloaded one of the fixes from the link you gave me and then opened it
on the laptop (seeing as I could share files) and bingo.
Thanks millions
