Hi, I'm a newbie... so sorry if terminology is lacking ....

I am attempting to install a cd/r into a machine (Pentium 4, Windows XP
Home) that already has an installed cd/rw.

Before Install
-------------
HDD was on one (ide ?) cable, existing CD/RW was on other cable.
Hint: Jumper on rear of CD/RW was set to slave.

What I Tried
-------------
1) Modifed jumper on CD/RW to master, connected CD/R into same cable, with
jumper set to slave.
Booted computer, could only see one of the two CD drives.

2) Same as above, but chained CD/R onto HDD cable as slave. No go.

3) Swapped two cd devices around, changed jumpers accordingly. Rebooted, no
sign of one of the drives (I think the one set to master).

3) Out of interest, pulled CD/R out all together, rebooted machine with
CD/RW still set as master, system couldn't see CD/RW...
(Why does CD/RW need to be slave when it is on its own cable ?)

It seems...

It seems as if the two cables are really one ?? When I look at where they
connect to the motherboard, they are right next to each other (they lie
parallel) & appear to be bridged ?

So..

Can anyone please tell me how to get these two cd devices to work on this
machine.. Is this something to do with a SCSI device in the mix... Am I
missing something very obvious here ?

As a suggestion, you should remove all the CD CDR CDRW devices in the then
disconnect the cables and then move them and set jumpers and then reboot and
let the computer find your devices.

Be advised that some drivers are harder to remove for CDR drives. You may
have to edit the Registry because XP uses DMA and port addresses to transfer
the data and it writes things about this into the Registry. Roxio Easy CD
is bad about this.

When you click on the properties of the devices, in the device manager,
does it give you an error number?

If it does look up the error in the microsoft knowledge database.
