'cannot connect' activesync

When I attempt to sync my compaq ipaq i get a 'cannot
connect' error message. I've deleated the activesync
program files and downloaded new. Followed all of the
directions - unplug ipaq from USB, take out of cradle, turn
off, turn on reconnect etc, but stiff I get cannot connect.
When I installed the activesync I got popup message that
it was being allowed..............?????????????

I must admit that I've not syncronyzed since last spring,
and my only new program is this one.

Suggestions?
