The only reason now that I'm posting this here in networking_sharing is if
someone out of the blue can say, "Oh, I know the answer to that one!"
Netgear doesn't. Microsoft doesn't. GameCrazy.com doesn't.

I've learned a number of things and have a yet incomplete solution.
Removing the router fixes the login problem. Hardwiring (Ethernet) the
router does not fix the problem. Using a borrowed Netgear-G router fixed
the problem. Using a different computer & network fixed the problem.
Clearing the DNS cache did not fix the problem. Reinstalling 'Visual C++
2005 Redistributable (x64) did not fix the problem. Resetting the N router
to factory setting did not fix the problem but may have fixed a second
website I recently discovered was having a similar problem,
'consumerreports.org'.

Netgear offshore technical support is terrible and on top of that the
software warranty has expired on this N router. Netgear or GearHeads or
whoever they think they are could not determine if the trouble was hardware
or software and forced me to buy extended software coverage which is now in
the process of being refunded. I do not need the higher N speed. I only
have one computer now and never needed to move large files around wirelessly
and as fast as possible when I had more then one computer. I've bought a
new Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G2 to install and will be
selling the Netgear Wireless-N Router WNR2000 for the best offer. The new
router is from Best Buy and if it doesn't work either things will get very
very interesting. My OS environment is Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

Unless someone has an 'Aha!' to make this is sort of just a blog of what has
been going on. Thanks.

The new Linksys router fixes the problem just like the Netgear router on
loan. Everything is almost back to normal.
