Trying to reinstall my network card drivers, but Win2k keeps
erroring out. I'm using the Device manager in 'My Computer' to
try to update my system. Windows 2000 has SP4 installed.

================================================================
Network Adapter

Ethernet Controller

Device Status
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver
================================================================

Then I attept to upgrade the driver.

================================================================
Completing the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard

Ethernet Controller

An error occured during the installation of the device

The name is already in use as either a service name or a service
display name.
================================================================

So I have no network or use of the internet.

Help me please.

I found the solution using the routine recommended for a Windows XP
system.

Site: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;823771
Desc: You Cannot Install Driver Files for Your Network Adapter and You
Receive a "Cannot Install This Hardware" Error Message

I used the following 'fudging' to make it work in windows 2000.

1. copied msconfig.exe from my Windows XP system to my
Windows 2000 system since it wasn't there already.
2. Skipped the line with save in\file\desktop (Line 14.)

All the rest worked out ok.

After inserting the driver floppy it installed okay and I was
able to go to the internet.

What a day. 8-)
