Hello

I thought that I would throw this out there and see if someone has seen
this problem before. I bought a TRV480 sony camcorder with the purpose
of both recording all of our old Hi8 movies and also use it as a
capture device for our old VHS home movies on to the computer.

I tried it on my computer with Ulead and Nero doing the capturing and I
could go all the way up to 720x480 30fps 8000kbps, etc using the USB
streaming with USB 2.0. Worked great on both of Ulead and Nero. I
have Windows XP Pro, Xeon 3.2Ghz, FireGL V3100 desktop.

So I thought I had it all figured out on how to do the capturing.

My dad took over the process because he wanted to do the videos at his
own pace at home, but the same software will only let me select up to
640x480 resolution. I have never even heard of this before, but from
what I can find is it is so videos show up right on a computer screen
which has a square pixel structure? He has a Toshiba Laptop 3Ghz
Pentium 4, with a ATI mobility 9000.

Is the software checking the speed of the computer and locking out
720x480? Or Does the computer just not have the right drivers?

Software will allow you to capture as DV-AVI (Thats the best option)
I use roxio, and it can also allow the DV stream to be captured "on the
fly" as an mpeg1 or 2.
Your software maybe set to capture as a hi-res Mpeg 1/2????
Rummage around, as an example: In Roxio, when it has detected attached
devices, and I select my Sony, it always defaults to capture as DV.
Roxio has a drop-down option to select Mpeg1/2. (But defaults to DV.)
Your software maybe set to the last option selected. It maybe just a
case of manually re-selecting to capture as "DV".

Using Ulead Video Studio my computer allows me to pick MPEG-2 720x480,
in Ulead Video Studio my dad's laptop will only go to MPEG-2 640x480.
In Roxio my computer will let me pick their form of DV (I'm not near my
computer to check right now) and set it to 720x480, on my dad's the
same option will only let me pick up to 640x480.

The same options come out the same in both softwares and will not let
me pick over 640x480.

It is very puzzling to me,

I was stumped as I'm UK and PAL....................
But I've rummaged around all my settings in my software
and it transpires that 640x480 is an NTSC Dvix AVI setting.
There is most definately the option to deselect DVIX compression
in both Ulead and Roxio, then you will get 720x480...............

ooops, excuse my spelling, I of course meant "DivX"
(the codec Xvid is divX spelt backwards.......)

The wikipedia entry has the caution that the "neutality" of
the article is in dispute, nontheless at bottom of article are
several links that maybe of help.
My DivX codec was part of my Roxio software, so that main
name assures it to be compliant and tested!
But my brief surf for info reveals that your fathers PC may
have any variant of DivX? Including an all domineering
version that is near impossible to reverse?

I haven't been able to make it out to my dad's house yet to try this.
I looked around on my computer and I can not find where to shut off the
divx codec at. I will try looking at some of the links that you
mentioned.

You said that I should be able to shut it off in Ulead? One thing that
I wonder is if divx is for AVI, and I am picking to record in MPEG-2
why does it still use something from AVI?

One thing that I checked out is that my computer has an option under
Control Panel => Display => Settings => advanced then I list all modes
that my graphics card can have and 640x480, and 720x480 are both
choices. My dad's computer only has 640x480 and not 720x480 as an
option. Maybe just a coincidence?

I will keep checking and will for sure post the answer if I find one.

The videos turned out okay recording in 640x480 using USB-stream, so I
just gave up on trying to get it to 720x480. So sorry I could not give
any help on this topic. I would probably invest in a firewire card if
the quality was really bad.

640 x 480 is about the highest you'll get in USB and it won't be true
DV-AVI.... since you can't capture digital video with an analog connection.
