do you have a firewire device installed?
if so, this is a rather common problem with xp, there
doesn't appear to be a fix available yet.
you must restore your system prior to the firewire device
being installed to get internet connectivity back.
google groups for "firewire xp" for all the gruesome
details.
good luck
