cannot browse when connected with modem.

Hello I have a pc in my office that when it is connected
to the LAN, it browses the internet fine. But when it is
connected thru earthlink dial-up, the browser cannot
browse. Is there a setting somewhere that I dont know
about that will not let IE use a modem?
