Just before performing system recovery, which I am reluctant to do, I want to
see if there's any other way to fix it.

When booting to safe mode, after loading mup.sys it just crashes and restarts.

The error message that is displayed is:

0x0000007B(0xF7906528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Could someone make sense of this thing?

Thanks.

Hi Jonathan,

Reformat and reinstall the operating system. You may need to do it from
outside of the Windows XP CD, if it can't load to install. I mean to
reformat the Hard drive, if Windows XP CD crashes when it boots up. I had to
do it, on a friend's computer, where Windows XP Professional Edition CD
crashed when booting up to repair.

Is there no other way other than reinstalling the system? I can boot from the
XP CD, I can boot normally, I just can't boot into safe mode...

your windows cd can
be helpful because it
provides 2 options/tools
in addition to installing
windows.

one of the options is to
log into the recovery console
that will give you access to
the disk system.

at the disk prompt you
can try running these commands:

fixboot
bootcfg /rebuild
chkdsk

then exit, reboot without
cd and see if you have regain
access to your regular and
safemode windows.

here is more info for
the above:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

(incidentally, the word help
is also a command you can
enter at the prompt.)

---------------------

the other option is "repairing"
your windows installation which
will replace or repair, missing or
corrupted system files.

here is more info for
the above:

If you can boot from the XP CD, you can repair the operating system and
after repairing the operating system, you still crash, it is because of a
Device Driver, not installed by Microsoft.

Now, you can spend hours trying to find the bad driver, or you can
reformat and reinstall the operating system and use Drive / Partition
Imaging like Acronis, Ghost or BootIt NG to back up the operating system's
partition, at various stages of installation, so when you find the bad
drive, you can Go Back and restore, before proceeding to restore the other
drivers and programs.

Some older versions of Nero disrupt the safe mode boot process after mup.sys
loads. If you have Nero on your system there is a patch on the Ahead
website.
