I installed some updates from Microsoft last night and rebooted and came up
with this error:

TRAP 0000000D ============== GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT ===================

tr=0028 cr0=00000011 cr2=00000000 cr3=00000000
gdt limit=03FF base=00017000 idt limit=07FF base=00017400

cs:eip=0008:00317A92 ss:esp=0010:00061FE8 errcode=0000
flags=00010002 NoCy NoZr IntDis Down TrapDis
eax=00001198 ebx=00300102 ecx=00001676 edx=0C398B86 ds=0000 es=0010
edi=0036169A esi00051DBE ebp=00000000 cr0=00000011 fs=0030 gs=0000

It is before I even get to hit F8 for boot options like "last known good
config". If I boot to the Win2K disk I can get to the recovery consol and
access the whole disk no problem. I tried fixboot with no luck.

I really don't know what I am doing here so figure it is best to stop until
I get some guidence.

Can someone give me an idea where to go from here?

TIA

Sam

You could have a look at this thread

http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/11788/

it looks as if might be a boot loader prob either repair with the CD or get
a copy from another system?

ted

Thanks Ted, that saved me. I had already done the automatic repair from
the CD earlier but I guess that does not do the boot stuff? This time I
did the manual repair and left everything selected and it is up and
running. The repair found a bunch of files including the boot files that
it said were screwed and replaced them. So far since I have it running I
have also found 2 text files that are a mess, full of extended chars.

Would this mean my hard drive is going? I wonder what caused the messed
up text fles?

Big thanks again for your help Ted.

Very likely, or at least something associated with
the hard drive like the ribbon cable or the controller.

Likely the hard drive subsystem is dying.

Backup the stuff you'll slash your wrists if you lose
even if you have to run out and buy a burner to do that.

I have a pretty recent image saved on another hard drive and I just added
an image of this mess I now have, so I should be OK there.

Once I got the system running I ran Norton Disk Doctor which ran CHKDSK and
afterward the two text files with the mess in them were now fixed.

I am now pretty sure this is connected to the Microsoft updates I installed
before this started. Once I got running again I went to Win Update to
update the files that repair had reinstalled from the CD. Guess what. I
reboted and ended up with a stop error just before windows desktop appears.
Missing winserv.dll file it said.

I did the repair with win2k CD again and it rebooted fine and I am now
doing the 13 updates one at a time from the oldest (very hard to tell which
is oldest) to the newest to see if I find what is causing this. I hope the
updates are listed with the oldest at the bottom of the list and the newest
on top.
