I'm trying to add custom controls to the control toolbox but nothing happens.
I right click on the blank space at the bottom of the control toolbox, go
down to custom controls and (left) select it, but nothing happens. no other
boxes open, no error messages, etc.

anybody ever seen this before or know how to fix it?

I've never seen that here but some queries on www.outlookcode.com seem to
indicate that either rebooting or adding custom controls to the Outlook VBA
user form control toolbox may solve the problem for the forms control
toolbox.

When in doubt, reboot. Already tried that.
Your last answer makes no sense to me at all. I'm trying to add custom
controls to the toolbox as indicated in my post. You said "adding custom
controls to the Outlook VBA user form control toolbox may solve the problem
for the forms control toolbox." Is there another forms control toolbox
somewhere?

Yes, there's another toolbox. It's the one for the User Forms in the Outlook
VBA project. According to some posts on www.outlookcode.com doing what I
suggested fixed the same form controls toolbox problem you're having.

Alt+F11 to open the Outlook VBA project. Insert, UserForm to open a user
form. Select the form and click View, Toolbox.
