A few months ago, I manually archived a few folders of my inbox and it worked
great. I verified that the archive was there, (open outlook data file) and
the archive data was in my folder list. I just tried to archive more data and
it does not work. I do not get any error messages, outlook seems like it is
going through the process ( a little quickly) but the files do not move. They
are still in the original folders, not in archive. archive.pst did not change
in size. How can I correct this? Using Outlook 2003.

Archive depends on the date settings you have set, and this date is the
modified date and not neccessarily received date

I expanded the date range to all files older than 1/1/2010 and it archived
some files going backwards starting in December, skipped August, some of July
and most of March. It appears like it is archiving random clusters. Is there
a way to change the modified vs. received date for archiving purposes?

Again, you are not examining the *Modified* date, only the *Received* date.
Outlook uses the former, not the latter. If items were not archived, it's
becuase they have been changed more recently than the date you chose for the
archiving. Add the Modified field to the column header using Field Chooser
and you'll see what we mean. Read this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/197981 . It applies to any version of
Outlook.

I added 'modified date' as a column so I could view it. The files that didn't
move have a modified date of 'none'.

according to MS the modified date should change when a file is copied or
moved. I moved several files to a different folder and the modifed date is
still 'none'.

I then tried it again with the computer date back a year ago so the date
would be older and I could archive more easily, but that did not work either.
The date is still 'none'.

I know I can copy the files manually to the archive folder, but I would like
the archive restore feature to work by date. It would help based on how data
is stored and records retention for an audit.

An empty modification date (displayed as "none") is the equivalent of a date
in something like the year 4701, so they'll never get archived. Is there
anything particular about these specific items, such as them having been
imported at some point or affected by synching with a handheld device? I
can't think of any other reasons why they'd not have modification dates.

I see now that copying to a .pst may not change the date. I then set a
followup flag (and cleared it) and the date changed. I set the computer date
in the past, and was able to archive properly. Although not ideal, I should
be able to accomplish what I need.

Is there any reason the modified date was 'none'?

No syncing. I've been running outlook since 2002. All 2002,3,4 files are
fine. All files in 2005,6,7,8 have no date. 2009 and 2010 are fine. I did
change computers, but just copied the .pst from one to another. I did
upgrade from Office 2000, but that was in 2003.

My .pst had to be rebuilt a few times because it wasn't closed properly, but
other than that, I don't remember any problems.
