cannot activate old XP Professional

I nhave an old laptop (2001) and the hgard drive died. I am trying to
re-install XP Professional and it won't take the product key. Te manufacturer
is no longer in business. I cannot get to the phone number to call Microsoft,
or they ask for a credit card. How do I get a new key or find out to to ket
the original to work? Thank you!
