I'll try to describe the setup and problem and what we've tried to
solve the problem as best I can. First, here's the setup:
Computer1: Desktop running XP Pro; Wired to DSL modem which is wired
to the Netgear wireless router
Computer2: Desktop running XP Pro; Netgear wireless 802.11g card
Computer3: HP Laptop XP Home; Broadcomm 54g MaxPerformance 802.11g
wireless card
IP addresses are assigned via DHCP. All of the subnet masks are good.
All 3 machines can connect to the internet just fine.
I have not enabled simple file sharing on the 2 "pro" machines;
although, I did try it and it didn't make a bit of difference. All
permessions are granted and we added "everyone" to the users list also
granting full/administrator permissons. The files/printers that we
want to share have been shared. All computers are in the same
Workgroup.
In MY NETWORK PLACES, Computer2 and Computer3 can see and access
Computer1 Computer1 can see the other two computers but cannot access
them --"permission denied, check with the administrator" message.
In VIEW WORKGROUP COMPUTERS, Computer2 only lists itself and Computer3
only lists itself. Computer1 can see the other two computers but
cannot access either of them.
PINGING: All 3 computers can be pinged using their IP addresses but
not their names. When pinging using names, I get the following: "Ping
request could not find host <computer name>. Please check the name and
try again."
I ran "ipconfig /all" on Computer2 and here are my results:
Host Name: Computer2
Primary DNS suffix: <blank>
Node Type: Unknown
IP Routing Enabled: NO
WINS Proxy Enabled: No
I ran "ipconfig /all" on Computer3 and here are my results:
Host Name: Computer3
Primary DNS suffix: <blank>
Node Type: Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled: NO
WINS Proxy Enabled: NO
Firewalls are all turned off.
I get the Browser error (8009) in the event log when Computer1 is
turned on first. Otherwise, it's as if there are no browsers enabled
on either Computer2 Computer3, even though the browser is set to
"auto." If Computer1 is not turned on neither Computer2 nor Computer3
even list themselves in the WORKGROUP. I also continue to get NetBT
4321 event errors in the event log when Computer 1 is turned on first.
The only way all 3 computers can share files is if we use the IP
addresses rather than the computer names.
The really strange thing is this. For 2 weeks this problem has
persisted. Saturday morning I ran One Button Checkup on Norton
SystemWorks on Computer #2 and, all of a sudden, all (3) computers
were listed in Workgroup and My Network Places on all 3 machines and
all computers were accessible by their names. At that point, I figured
the problem was fixed and did not touch another thing nor have we
added any software or anything else. Everything was great for about 7
hours. The only thing that happened at that point is that my husband
played "Call of Duty" on TeamSpeak on Computer1.
Would you recommend resetting TCP/IP on all computers and starting
from scratch? Is it possible that "TeamSpeak" has reset something in
Computer1 that has caused this problem? I know I'm grasping at straws
but how does the network work like it's supposed to one minute and
then have problems, for no apparent reason, the next?
I would GREATLY appreciate any help that anyone can give! Even though
it's working with the IP addresses, and I know that I can assign
static IP addresses and just use the network that way, I am now
obsesses and bound and determined to get this network working the
right way.
