Greetings:
I have a unique problem: I've tried to automatically update Windows XP Pro
SP1 from the control panel and elsewhere on my desktop, used 2 different
browsers (and MSN) try to access windowsupdate.microsoft.com. But this
always returns with the error message "connection refused". I had previously
reinstalled XP Pro since I was having problems with a device driver. This is
working now, but all my hotfixes are gone in the add/remove software in
Control Panel. I am no longer prompted for updates to my system. I could
include a printout of my running processes if necessary.

Thanks a bunch,
Alex

Trying going to microsoft.com first and then click on
Windows Updates on the left side of the page.

Hello eft,
Thanks for your speedy response.
I can't log on to microsoft.com using IE 6.0 (I get redirected to a site
called www.marsfind.com. So I went to http://support.microsoft.com/, clicked
on Microsoft Windows Update, and AGAIN, I'm redirected to marsfind!
This happens to me when I try to access the downloads through MSN or
Netscape (which produces the "connection refused" error. I suspect that
some process on my computer is blocking this site for some reason. Window
Update on my start menu doesn't do it either. I'm really baffled on this
one.

Run Disk Cleanup through Start, Programs, Accessories,
Tools and Empty your Temporary Internet Files, etc. If
you still have a problem go to download.com, search for
ad-aware, download and run it.

Have you run through the Windows Update troubleshooter? Here's a link:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Also, scan with a current (post-2002 version using updated definitions)
antivirus program.

Check your hosts or lmhosts file for any entries relating to marsfind. Remove
those entries and leave only the entry pointing to localhost 127.0.0.1. Save it
and then try again.
