Cannot access unsecured internet sites

Windows XP abruptly stopped allowing access to unsecured internet sites.
Receive message after several minutes saying sites are unavailable.
Firewalls and internet settings appear OK. Virus scan and spyware removal
have no effect. Affecting both IE and Netscape browsers. Checked security
settings. Seem OK. E-mail and home network function fine. Secured sites
(banks, etc) display fine.
