I'm running XP home SP2 with an ADSL internet connection. Like many posts in
this section, I cannot access some web sites with Internet Explorer 6.0 ,they
seem to only be https sites, but I am not totally sure. e.g. I cannot access
Ebay.com or Microsoft.com. I have followed all of the solutions suggested in
this discussion group, i.e have reset the security settings to default,
checked the SSL 2.0 & 3.00 settings, deleted cookies and history etc. etc.
etc.but cannot resolve this problem.

If I connect through AOL I can access these web sites with no problem, also
no problem with IE using my laptop with a wireless connection to the ADSL
modem/router.

It looks like my only option is to uninstall IE and re-install. Does anyone
have any advice on the best way to do this?

Have you ckecked to see whether the 'Hosts' file is causing the problem?

Hi Emrys,

Yes I checked the hosts file, there was one entry in there (sorry can't
recall details, I'm not at the effected machine at present) which I didn't
recognise. I edited the file in notepad by placing a # in front of the entry.
I also used the regsvr32 DOS command as reccomended elsewhere on this forum
and "flush" utility in DOS also.

HAd exactly this problem end of last week and I have spent all weekend trying
to fix it, I tried everything and I do mean everything - anyway in the end i
uninstalled winxp SP2 and the pc's worked fine, I then reinstalled SP2 and
they are still working it all seemed to happen after installing an auto
update, so you may be able to fix it by uninstalling al the hotfixes (control
panel, add/remove programs/tick the show updates box and it should display
all the winxp updates installed on your machine uninstall these one by one
till it works. I havent tried any new windows updates since re installing -
to afraid !!! if you uninstall SP2 it will automatically take all the windows
updates installed since you installed SP" with it. I would be interested to
hear if this works for you also.

Make sure your firewall is not blocking port 443.

IE Restricted Zones via Control Panel> Internet Options> Security
Tab> and clicking on the "Restricted sites" to highlight them and then edit
it
using the SITES button.

Try disabling the XP SP2 firewall and see if that helps.

If you have Zone Alarm Pro, go to the "Privacy Tab", Main, Options and open
the Site List. You will find a number of sites that have various "cookie
controls" blocked. Unblock those on the sites you are getting the red X's.
However, this will allow 3rd party cookies and some other things you may not
want, but, it should eliminate the problem. SpyBot will block cookies for
things such as avenue A, etc.
