Hi all,

Weird problem here, a folder under my C:\ drive that contains ALL my
mp3's is now suddenly inaccessible. When I
click to open it it says "C: is not formatted, do you want to format
it now?" or something like that.

Please advise. I simply cannot lose my 40GB & 5 years worth of
music!!!

Thanks!

Right-click "My Computer" > select "Manage" > select "Disk Management" (left
pane). See if you have a healthy NTFS partition. If not open a command
prompt Run > "cmd" (no quotes) click OK. At the prompt type "chkdsk /f".
The message will say you can't run it in Windows so select "Y" and restart
the computer. Check disk will appear as a blue text screen. Check disk will
make any repairs to a damaged file table.

See if that helps. You may also have too little free disk space left.

You haven't backed up to external media for *5* years?!!! What were you
thinking?

The problem could be caused by various things - you haven't given us
enough information to get focused help. Some things to look at/do:

1. Do you have a current version antivirus on the machine? There are
viruses that target popular file formats such as .mp3.

2. How big is the hard drive? How much free space is on it?

3. You can run Chkdsk on the drive in case the file system has become
corrupted, but I wouldn't do this without backing up your data first.
You can lose it all if the drive is going or Chkdsk hoses the structure.

4. Boot with a rescue cd such as Knoppix (Linux) or a Bart's PE with a
an external USB hard drive connected. If the folder can be seen, copy it
to the external hard drive so your data is safe. Copy other data to this
external drive while you're there to be on the safe side. Then run
Chkdsk /f.

Well then, you'd better learn how to back things up; this will happen to you
more and more as time goes on. If it took 5 years to steal, I mean, collect
all that music, then take a moment and learn how to backup.

Then learn how to use AV and malware detectors.

Whatever happened to the concept of innocent until proven guilty? We all
know such things happen, but to tag everyone, without certain knowledge
of the facts, as a thief seems a bit unfair.

After you fix your problem. Be sure to regularly back up your most
important files to CD. Do it regularly, and keep the backup CDs in
separate places in your home. And even take some to your parents home
for safe keeping. It's an easy way to keep some piece of mind as a hard
drive can fail at any time, even a brand new one.
