Greetings,

>From the start menu selecting "My Computer" causes all desktop icons

to disappear and come back but the browser does not open. Same happens
when right clicking "Start". I can access folders via MSWord file open
browser but it is often quite slow. Can also see directories from IE
File > open file.

Any ideas?

Thanx,

gtb

check in safe mode. restart the computer and keep tapping F8. choose safe
mode and login as an administrator. then check.

also create a new user account and check.

Works fine from safe mode. Computer has Norton, spysweeper and window
washer on it.

You may want to investigate the context menu extensions on the PC.
These are things like "Scan with ___" that extend Explorer's functions.
One tool to do that is Shell Extension Viewer.

I'd also be a little suspicious of Norton and Spysweeper working
together and not introducing some Quirks and Anomalies on the PC.
