Cannot access my computer and explorer

After an unexpected crash (screen went black) I cannot access internet
explorer, my computer or explorer. Other browsers are fine and programs seem
to run without problem. When computer is turned on there is an error message
about direct x over the desktop, and almost all icon on low right side
disappear. I have tried to reinstall windows 2000 prof. but that does not
help. neither does reinstalling internet explorer. Please help before I
trash the pc.
