"XP Home is perfectly capable of doing what you're trying.
One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall. There are other possibilities too. What
firewall
did you disable? Read this article with an open mind.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each

You did not state whether or not you tried to "ping localhost" or
(127.0.0.1) - failure to ping locahost usually indicts a problem with TCP/IP
parameters on the computer.
