Hi,

I'm trying to set up a network on a XP home computer (i have never used home
before, only professional). I have set up many XP professional networks
before and never had this problem... when i try to access localhost from the
'run' box, xp cannot find it. same thing happens if i type in the IP address
(ie. 192.168.1.101). i have no problem finding the router (192.168.1.1).

i have disabled the firewall and set up file and print sharing through the
network wizard.

is this a problem with the computer or just a limitation of the home edition??

XP Home is perfectly capable of doing what you're trying.

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall. There are other possibilities too. What firewall
did you disable? Read this article with an open mind.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

You did not state whether or not you tried to "ping localhost" or
(127.0.0.1) - failure to ping locahost usually indicts a problem with TCP/IP
parameters on the computer.

AJ,

If you're going to answer the OP, why not reply to his posts? Not thru a third
party. All you're doing is confusing things.

i only disabled windows personal firewall as i believe i don't have any
other firewall running... i'm going to check for a hardware firewall or an
antivirus package as well...

i pinged 127.0.0.1 without any problems. again i can not ping localhost????

the network setup is 1 linksys router (192.168.1.1) with 1 PC
(192.168.1.101). Also there is an AirPort router (10.0.0.1 - I'm not sure
what the IP address is for the linksys side.) from Apple with an iBook behind
it.

all i'm really trying to do is open a shared music folder on the PC and copy
those files to the iBook. This is my friends setup so i don't have access to
it all the time.

thanks for you help Chuck,
