When I right-click the Local Area Connection and select
Properties, nothing happens I am using a D-Link nic
connected to a DSL-300 modem via a patch cable. I'm
worried I may have a virus or other annoying problem...

Does anything show up in the Event Log? Are you logged on as an
administrator? Are you running Windows XP Home or Windows XP Professional?
What is the status of the connection? Can you connect to the network?
