opportunity to make a back up.So the problem now is that I cannot access the
files and music under my documents.They were not for common use. I bought a
new hard disk and I had to install windows xp again.I can see the files but
cannot do anything else with them.Help?

You need to disable Simple File Sharing and take ownership of the files.

Note: If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you
must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an
account that has Administrative rights to have access to the
Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

I assume you're getting Access Denied error
messages?
You have to "take ownership" of the files. The
reinstall created all new IDs for the files and
none of them are going to match what you created
as users for the new setup.
Have you tried a Repair INstall?

If you need further help post back; neither of the
above are difficult if you know how to do them,
but I've no idea plus I'm not sure I've
interpreted your question right, so rather than
get into stuff you don't need ...

Thanks for trying to help me.

But in windows xp home edition there is not a security tab under the file
properties and no disable simple file sharing under the files options.I think
I saw these in vista.I took my old hard drive to another computer with vista
and I changed the ownership of the folders.This time I could "see" the files
but could not open them.A technician told me not to boot from the old hard
drive because I will lose it all.So I think I'm on a dead end.Do you know
anything else?

As I noted in my earlier response, if you have the old hard drive connected
to a computer running Windows XP Home Edition, you have to restart the
computer and boot into Safe Mode. The Security tab will then be available.

As for accessing your old files from a computer running Windows Vista, did
you change the folder's permissions so that the account you were logged in
with had Full Control?
