I have a weird problem with my computer. I cannot access a handfull of
websites (get the "IE cannot display the webpage" warning). These are not
fly-by-night sites -- they include my.yahoo.com (my start page),
moneycentral.msn.com, buy.com, morningstar.com and some others.
Everything else can be accessed normally.

On my home network, I have a host computer (XP + IE7), another desktop (XP
+ IE7), and a notebook (Vista + IE7). They are connected by a wired router
(Linksys BEFSR41). Generally, the second desktop exhibits the same
problems as the host. The notebooks has no problems (at least yet)
accessing any website.

I tried accessing some of the websites in safe mode. Had same problem.

When I reboot the host computer, the start page (my.yahoo.com) does come up,
but it cannot be refreshed successfully. Weird.

I run an anti-virus program (Norton) and several anti-spyware programs on a
regular basis.

This problem started (Feb 25th ?) about 2-3 days after my cable provider was
switched from Insight to Comcast. I don't know if there is a relationship
there or not. Immediately after the switch things worked fine.

Hopefully, someone has some good ideas and/or advice. Thank you.

Bob, if you eliminate the router and connect the problem machine(s) directly
to the modem, does the behavior persist?

Using which protocol? HTTPS? Then check your security settings
e.g. the security protocol settings (in Options, Advanced tab, Security section.)

How do you get your DNS addresses? You can use ipconfig /all
and nslookup to find out what they are being set to. Since you have
two cases working and not working this might be a useful point of comparison.

Carefully type the following in the Command box:

ipconfig /release [ENTER]

ipconfig /flushdns [ENTER]

ipconfig /renew [ENTER]

Type EXIT to close & turn off the computer(s).

2. Disconnect the computer(s) from the router or modem | Disconnect the
router from the modem | Turn off both the router and the modem | Turn on the
modem | When all modem lights are lit, reconnect the modem to the router
then turn on the router | When all router lights are lit, reconnect and
restart the computer(s).

I don't know if the settings are correct or not for IE7 + XP.
SSL 2 & 3 are checked, TLS 1 is unchecked.

The "risks" are comparable to turning off the lamp on your desk, unplugging
it, replacing the light bulb, plugging it in and turning it on again.

The procedure will "wake up" your computer and modem, "reminding" them that
they're getting data from a different source now (Comcast vs Insight).

However, please be aware that MSN Money Central and other MSN-based
applications have been having server "issues" for the past several days.
