Even though I just started using Messenger, I'm pretty
knowledgeable about computers otherwise but can't figure
out what's going on here. All I want to do is change
my "display name" as it appears to others. Right now I
show up as being just an email address but want it to
show my name instead. When I try to modify this as
instructed to in the Helps (right click name > select
properties > type new name) the field I need to change is
locked up for some reason? (gray instead of black
letters). What next? Thanks

well, instead of going through help..here's what you do.
when you sign into msn, and your display with the
contacts page containing whose online..etc. Click on the
menu tool bar that says "tools" then, click on "options"
from there, click on "personal" it should have a area
where your current name is, delete that, type the one you
want, and click "ok"
