Its a sad day for Canon, unless the chip is only used for positive things
like detecting which colour is in which slot to prevent users mixing them
up. However if it is to stop you refilling then there is no longer much
reason to buy a Canon.

Well.... look how well it worked for Epson. There will be a
workaround, meanwhile now you know what's comming you can buy current
generation printers that are pre-chipped... perhaps buy into the new
ones when aftermarket chips are available.

its still a sad day. In 5 years even the latest Canon no chipped printers
will be well out of date and you'll have to live with the hassles of chips.
However this means I have the same problem with Canon as I do with Epson, so
I might as well buy an Epson as much as a Canon, where as now I wouldn't
even bother to consider an Epson.

Very much agree with this view - just in case Canon pay the slightest
attention to any of us!

I'd recommend to buy the printer NOW (I got an iP4000 recently).

But Canon claimed that refilling will remain possible for new
cartridges:
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/resul...93&words=Canon
(German)

The Austrian Marketing Manager Michael Lukschander claimed that the
chip is for improved ink level detection ONLY. Printing will not stop
when the tank is empty: It will have the status of a warning only.

Personally, I doubt those claims. Printers will be shown today on the
IFA Berlin... We'll see. I guess there will remain some refillable
printers, while the low price printers will be 'dongled'.

I noticed that distributors of bulk ink were already selling bulk inks
for these printers, so refilling shouldn't be a problem.

I noticed BCI-7 ink first, which the cli-8 ink is the same near as i'm
aware. This was before the iP4200 printers were for sale in america.
I wouldn't consider the existance of the bulk ink as evidence esp since
one can in theory set their printer as a pixus which take the same ink
at the new series only using the bci-6 style tanks.
