I want to disable updates of automatic links in Excel. If I receive a
workbook with cells that another user has linked to a file from their
temporary folder (emailed attachment?), I can't stop Excel from trying to
update the link and therefore get #REF! msgs.

When I go to Startup Prompt in the Edit Links section and select "'Don't
display the alert and don't update automatic links" option, the file still
doesn't stop returning the error msg.

You might try going to Tools>Options>Calculation tab. Click on Manual
Calculation radio button. You might accomplish it this way.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for your reply. The problem I'm having is that in Office 2007, I can
only manage to change the calculation (and link update) settings within a
specific workbook, which means I have to open the files to change that file's
settings. Unfortunately, I get the error msgs as soon as I open the file to
change the settings. Is there a way to change my defualt settings in Excel?
