Can’t turn off design mode in Developer Tab in Word Document.

It seems that I created a template, using content controls, choose item
buttons, etc. Halfway through I turned on the design mode in developer tab.
I cannot turn off design mode. An error message- appears telling me I have
content controls, floating objects, that have to be removed. Where do I
begin?

Usually, ActiveX controls force Word into Design mode (because of macro
security), but this seems like a different issue.

What is the exact text of the error message?
