Can you sum the amount of type a word appears?

Trying to sum the about of type a risk is open....So i need a statement to say

=SumIF(A1;A6=open,dont count)???

Sorted it - should have used Count If

=COUNTIF(B16:B4000,"*Open")

Use the countif function. countif(a1:a6,"open")
