in an attempt to clean up my sent file, i'd like to delete all but the
current month's emails. is there a 'sort' to accomplish this? do i have to
select individual emails?

Click on the Sent Column.....

After sorting on the Sent column, you can select a range of messages by
clicking the first, then holding Shift while clicking the second to select
everything between the two. You can also hold Ctrl while you click to
choose a non-contiguous range.
