Can you maintain original slide numbers when a slide is hidden?

We often create a detailed PowerPoint file to use as a handout, and then hide
several slides for the presentation version. PowerPoint automatically
renumbers the presented slides to exclude the hidden slides. People who are
following the handout while viewing the presentation are confused by the
differing slide numbers between the two versions.

Is there a way to maintain the original slide numers in a presentation when
some slides are hidden?
