I have a machine with xp media on it, and I can't seem to install XP
Pro (full version) on it.

When I try to install booting from CD it erros out.

Any particular reason....there isn't much difference between the two.

Hi Gregg,

If memory serves me right, Media Edition is considered a "superset" of XP
Pro, and what you propose to do is a downgrade. You'll have to do a clean
install of XP Pro.

And the error message would be?

If the system won't boot from an XP CD, the problem doesn't have anything to
do with Media Center Edition, but rather with the hardware, the BIOS, or
that particular disc.

As to problems during Setup, you would only be able to do anything other
than a clean install, and then only possibly, with an Upgrade version XP
Pro install CD. It will not work if the XP Setup version isn't set to
regard XP Pro as an upgrade to XP Media Center Edition.

The CD label will say "Upgrade" on it. If it doesn't, there's no chance of
anything other than a clean install, and that means wiping the drive or
using a new drive.

OEM install CD versions, and IIRC VLA versions, will never be able to
perform an upgrade. You must do a clean install with either of these.

Despite the apparently similarities and commonalities in the code base,
these two versions are not the same. There are a number of apps that
simply don't run properly on MCE and are not supported.

I would suggest that you'll be better off - and sooner - with either wiping
the existing install, or pulling the drive and installing a new one, and
then doing a clean install to a newly created and formatted partition.

In the latest versions at least, Domain Connectivity doesn't work in Media
Center.

That's a pretty big difference to some people.

Yes the lack of domain connectivity is the big issue. My client
purchased (without consulting me) the latest biggest baddest Dell
multimedia monster, and now I need to put XP on it. sigh.

The error he gets when trying to boot fromt he XP (full) CD is:

Error message on boot from XP CD --> After pressing any key to boot
from CD, the blue screen Windows Setup pops up, on the bottom of the
screen shows "Setup is loading files"......then screen displays
"Starting Windows"........then error: " A problem has been detected
and windoews has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."
***Stop: 0 x 0000007B (0 x F78D2524)

If you have another qualifying hard disk handy, you might swap it in and see
if that helps at all.

Disconnect *all* devices not critical to booting the system - just leave the
keyboard, mouse, and display.
