Can You Get 2 Hour Movie on a 4.7 GB DVD?

Am using Pinnacle Studio Plus 9.4 with my AIW X800-XT to
record/edit/burn TV programs to DVD. But currently, I can
only record about 70 minutes of video to a standard 4.7 GB
single-sided DVD. I have a lot of 2-hour movies I'd like to
put on a single, standard DVD.

But when you rent movies, you can get a 2-hour or 3-hour, or
more, video on a single DVD. How do they do it?

Is there some form of compression that allows you to record
2 or 3 hours of video onto a standard DVD?

Thanks for any help/advice.
Gary.

Considering that std def digital video is 27 MBytes/second,
uncompressed video chews through a DVD in 174 seconds so there is
obviously LOTS of compression already. If you don't want to use a
little more, you could always go the dual layer route. The drives are
cheap and the media is coming down.

Commercially pressed DVDs have been multilayer (up to 4) capable for
many years.

Try in alt.video.dvd.authoring - the experts in this kind of thing are more
likely to be found there.

hi

try free tool-program "DVD Shrink" ver 3.2.0.15
==> www.dvdshrink.org/what.html
will reduce size of your DVD.
Great program.

read help-menu well , program has few options for sizing

They do it by not using a 4.7 GB DVD. Commercially pressed DVDs are
almost always DVD9 - single sided double-layer. Your 4.7GB blank is
equivalent to DVD5 standard, being a single layer disk.

The latest double/dual layer formats (+R uses one name and -R the other)
and compatible drives (efefctively all the drives you'll find for sale
now) will get you over this, but be aware that you usually can't play
these two-layered disks on a standard DVD player. Their best use at the
moment, therefore, is for large backups of data, rather than a movie
project.

Two hours? Well, the standard quality setting for most software allows 2
hours of video, give or take a few seconds for the extra that have to fit.
Some of the softeware packages use only presets, HQ (1 hour), SP (2
hours), LP (2.5 or 3 hours), etc. This is awkward as if you have, as I
recently did, a video file of 1:59:xx, some of this software insists on
dropping to LP as you can't quite get 2 hours as you would with a "living
room" DVD recorder. Nero Vision, for one, will allow you to set custom
bit-rates so that you could fit this on by subtly and slightly (same
thing?!) reducing the bit-rate, rather than dropping all the way to LP
mode.

Compression? It is all compressed, the issue, as stated, is by how much.

I haven't read the other replies to your query, but they will hopefully be
along similar lines.

It isn't an easy topic and we are scratching the surface.

Best, Ian.

I apologise, a minor correction, I don't think those commercial disks are
strictly limited to two layers, though two is pretty much the norm and you
will normally find the words dual-layer on the sleeve.

As with CD, the home recordable formats of DVD, burned by laser, are not
in any way akin to commercially pressed disks.

Someone mentioned DVD shrink. A combination of Nero Recode and DVD
decrypter can do the same job, and there are others, but if I understand
you, your question is not about re-writing DVD material, it is getting
your own recorded video onto DVD.

Yes, DVD Shrink works great. Unless you're a real stickler, I haven't
noticed much difference in the few DVD's I've burned.

Thanks to ALL for all the tips. But now I'm having problems
with the new HP DVD 840i drive I just bought (upgraded from
HP DVD 300i).

The 840i is HP's newest, and supports 16X DVD+/-R media.
I've been using Pinnacle 9.4 to burn recorded/edited TV
programs to DVD+R and DVD-R discs.

Since upgrading the drive last weekend, have had nothing but
problems. When I go to burn, Pinnacle offers 12X, 8X, and
4X speeds. When burning at 12X (tried 5 times), each
failed, and wound up with coasters.

When burning at 8X, about 50% burned fine, the other 50% had
errors, so more coasters.

When burning at 4X (only tried twice), they both burned
fine, but took forever.

I've ran the Nero CD Speed/Performance tests using the
HP-supplied Nero software on various DVD media. I usually
use Memorex DVD+R 16X media. But even when running the
tests, they all produce some sort of error and stop. I've
tried various Sony DVD media, same problems.., Nero tests
produce errors.

With my previous HP DVD 300i, I NEVER HAD ONE FAILURE when
burning, and must have burned over 100 DVDs, always using
either the Memorex DVD+4 16X or Sony DVD+RW 4X. So, I don't
know if it's the drive, or if it could be something else.

I left the previous DVD drive's DLA (Drive Letter Access)
software on the PC, but HP provides a new product for Drag &
Drop Windows Explorer (DLA) called **IN CD4**. I haven't
installed it.

The current DLA software works with the new drive, when I
copy/paste files to a +/- RW DVD disc. And My
Computer/Properties on the drive shows "USE DLA" on the HP
DVD drive.

Am also not sure if it's a problem with compatibility with
the new drive, and the Pinnacle software. Am also sending
an email to Pinnacle Tech Support to see if they support
this new HP drive.

But with the Nero problems as well, seems like it might be a
bad drive. I read a review on this (840i) drive, where
others reported getting a "A LOT OF COASTERS" when recording
at high speeds.

Have a few days to return/exchange the drive, maybe getting
a Sony or Plextor.

If anyone has any advice, would greatly appreciate it. Will
also post similar on alt.video.dvd.authoring. Thank you.

Your problems burning at high speed are most likely a media issue. Most
DVD media being sold today is 4x or 8x. There is very little 12x media,
and even if it's available, at some level the faster you burn the lower
the quality [although burning at less than half the design speed of the
media can cause problems also].

Agreed. I went through a cakebox of 25 TDK 4X discs without problem till the
last 4. all bad. The drive is now happilly burning Verbatim 16X discs(16X
BenQ drive). Memorex is not considered a good brand. digitalfaq.com has a
section on disc quality but seems to be down at the moment.
I'm using Nero6 with Studio9+ without problem. I don't use packet software.
I would have removed the old drive ware before installing Nero.
Good luck in alt.video.dvd.authoring. You'll be on topic there.
