can you in frontpage use the .png format for buttons?

It should, have you tried it?

Yes,but when creating the buttons you only get *.gif or *.jpg as options.will
the buttons still work if i convert them afterwards?

You would create the button in a image/graphic application, save to your HD, then import into FP,
then insert on your page. FP is not going to create images in .png format.
