When I run my RDC session over VPN and try copying over a folder from
the Host to my Local PC it takes a very long time... 3+hours for 400mb.
For now, I just want to reduce the amount of data that I need to copy
from the Host to my Local PC.

My Host is running Windows 2003 SBS
My Local PC is running Windows XP SP1

Has anyone tried compressing a folder on a Host machine ( right-clicking,
choosing send to: compressed folder) and then copying over the compressed
folder back to your local pc and restoring it.

Will this work between these operating systems?

TIA

Why not try it? See what happens. You learn better if you try things
yourself.

If you need to work with files on remote computer, why you are using RDC? If
you are connected to your LAN via VPN, you just can copy files on your LAN
shares without RDC. BTW, it could be the speed of your VPN connection, that
takes so much time to copy large files.

Yes.
They should both use a "zip" compression method.
Although - you may or may not get much compression out of it - depending on
the type of files.
Sounds like your network/internet connection just needs upgrading.

The most permanent things in the world, usually were made as termporary
solutions.

As for your problem, I'll sugest you to cahnge your internet connection,
cose if you are using telephone-line modem connection, compressing files
will not help you. It will work only with cable or xDSL connections.

Better solution will be if your sysadmin will allow to work with your files
thru LAN share via VPN. In my opinion.

Thanks for the reply. The 502 mb folder compressed to 202mb.
I tried copying this compressed folder once earlier tonight, but an
error occurred during the paste. I was unable to re-paste it to my
PC and I wondered if I should try it again or take the longer approach
of copying the uncompressed folder. ( I estimated would have taken
over 5hrs to complete based on yesterday's experience of copying
over a 400mb image file.)

I am trying it again... 202mb to copy. It will take 108 min to complete.

Don't want to be annoying for you, but before you are going to change
registry, do not foget to make a bakup copy of the registry key you are
goinig to modify.

Hope you'll solve your problem.
