Is there a program that can simply attach an icon to an .iso file so
that each .iso file has a custom icon just like different .exe files
sometimes have different icons.

No you can't do that. All iso files have the same icon and all txt
files have the same icon. And so on and so on.

Actually, he can. Microangelo could do it and I venture that there are
numerous other programs as well.

He could also work around it by making shortcuts to each iso and changing
the icon on the shortcut.

I cannot take the obvious route of shortcuts, but I have been using
Microangelo for years. Which component of Microangelo can assign
separate icons to different .iso files and how? Thanks for the
suggestion.

Hello c627627,

Microangelo is for designing of icons only. If you already have an icon
you do not need Microangelo.

The problem is how to put that icon into the ISO. The answer is : there is
no way. Probably because the OS simply does not look for icons in
data-files (of any kind), so putting it in there would not give any kind of
visible result.

By the way: an ISO file is normally nothing more than a binary image of a
CD/DVD or even harddisk. The ISO file specs do not have anything described
in regard to icons. In other words: noone would know where (in the
ISO-file) to put that icon or to expect it when looking at/in the file ....

Bottom line: even though you cannot use it a shortcut is your best option.

Rudy Wieser

Different .exe files can have different icons, why not different .iso
files? I assume it is because executables are different from non
executable files.

In addition to being an icon editor, Microangelo can change hard drive
and program icons for example. This is why I thought maybe the poster
above was suggesting it can manipulate individual file icons. But I
understand, I will probably end up modifying a Folder icon - then
placing the .iso file inside that visually modified folder and do it
like that.

When you installed it it should have put an "Appearance" entry on the
context menu...right click file/folder/drive and select "Appearance".

It does much more than that.

Yes there is. Just did it as a matter of fact.

It could also be done - probably - using a resource editor but that would be
rather laborious.

Hello dadiOH,

Pardon me, but I know Microangelo as an icon-editor only. Hence its name.
You know, Michelangelo, the famous painter/artist ?

Although the ISO 9660 standard (for CDs) does seem to have 2048 bytes of
user data available (which I forgot), the OS does by itself not do anything
with it. After all, it *user* data.

By throwing all kinds of tools and third-party drivers/filters/services etc.
you can make the *current* computer do anything. Move the ISO to another
computer and it will display as normal, without a special icon (unless you
install Microangelos tools there too).

I'm sorry, but linking to an advertisement-page is not what I call "proof".

Bottom-line: Yes, its possible to put (some) user-data in an ISO 9660-file
(an icon or otherwise). On a standard computer that icon will never be
displayed though.

A bit of a warning though: I could imagine that some ISO creating programs
might be using that user-data area for a description of what the ISO
contains....
