can XP run from a usb external IDE?

I don't use Micro$loth win, but when I last bought a
80 GB IDE, I asked the vendor to put W98 on the
first 1 GB partition. And later I was able use it to
connect via my friends Fixed-Wireless-Terminal.
But when I bought my own FWT, it had the new
usb "Zero-CD" system, which needs XP or later.

I refuse to pay for Micro$loth crap !!

Now a "Seagate 3.5" 1TB expansion hard drive ..
plug-n-play...USB 2.0..." could be usefull,
provided it's not just a flash-mem and it can
be asscessed by standard USB, for linux too.

So, even if it's slow, if I asked the vendor
to install XP on the first 4GB, could I access
the FWT via XP using my non-M$-PCs?

I.e. can XP be moved between PCs via
a usb-IDE?

== TIA.

Setting up a USB drive as a boot drive is perfectly fine, but Windows XP
installs drivers and configures itself to suite the hardware in a particular
machine, so switching an XP USB boot drive between PCs is highly unlikely to
work. Why not use Ubuntu or similar?

To access that in linux, install the usb_modeswitch package.
If it doesn't automatically recognize the device, you can
manually try the usb_modeswitch command. See it's man page.

Moving xp between pc's is a bad idea, unless they are the same in all
hardware(type/version, etc).
Fresh install is a better idea, but you need the installdisks/info.

NO! that is absolutely NOT true

XP needs to be seriously hacked to get it to run from and external USB
drive...there's info on how to do it on Google but it's complicated and
it runs quite poorly anyway

How can I use Ubuntu, didn't you read that the
device is designed only for M$ ?

And consider: if I make a device that's Zero-CD,
then the 'modem' can have a secret/non-standard
proptocol, because *my* simulated-CD provides
the driver code to the PC. I.e. my device and
your M$-PC communicate in my secret protocol.

If you download and install VirtualBox, you can run any OS (even MAC
OSX Server) as a virtual machine and not effect your operations. The
disk image and settings can be kept on an external storage device if
you wish, it just must be accessible in the same exact place as
specified in your VM configuration when you try to start the virtual
machine..

No I didn't see that in your post and reading the above, I still don't see
it! This is probably due to the fact that a USB device is *universal* by
definition - Universal Serial Bus - an external USB hard drive is not
specific to microsoft operating systems!!

So your 'absolutely NOT true' outburst is a little over the top then!

The device will work in linux, if usb_modeswitch is installed,
and the underlying device works.

If that's the case, then it will not work in linux, or in
any version of windows the author doesn't support.
