Have any developers figured out how to successfully create and use Ubuntu
(or Debian for example) using VPC2007 on Vista (my current VS2008 dev
machine)? May of us have to use Linux in some capacity these days and my day
has come. I've tried several "how to's" on various web pages to no avail.
Another problem I seem to have is the dialog "Install or Update Virtual
Machine Additions" which has sucked up quite a bit of time trying to learn
about.

At the moment this RFI is simply one which seeks confirmation that it can be
done, then if it can be done on to the challenge of learning to make it
happen. My final option would be a dual-boot config on an XP Pro machine
however that is where I have my SQL Server 2005 Dev Edition running. I do
have one last option as I have another quite old machine with Win2000/XP Pro
dual boot and I could wipe that disk clean and use exclusively for the
Ubuntu distro.

Surely, a fair number of you other developers have been faced with this
dilemma. How did you resolve?

I don't know about using VPC 2007, but I had no trouble setting up Ubuntu on
a VMWare instance running on Vista.

If you do not need to run Windows at that same time as Ubuntu you have the
option to install Ubuntu just like any other Windows application. I think
the install exe is in the root folder of the disk.

After you reboot you have the option of booting into Windows or Ubuntu. No
portioning of the HD required, it will create a file that is used as the HD
when you boot into Ubuntu. I did it on my Windows 7 machine and it works
great.

You can also checkout microsoft.public.virtualpc, there have been threads on
Ubuntu there.

I have installed unbuntu on vmware, virtualbox and virtual pc, all
pretty much the same process. Mount the live cd in the virtual machine
settings and install from it. Just a quick google seemed to indicate
that the vm additions are available for linux distros now too,
although I haven't installed them before.

Thanks for the tips and insights -- especially the reminder to load
microsoft.public.virtualpc (doh) where I learned VMWare now allows their
free VMware Player to also create virtual machines; which worked out fine
for me after many failed attempts to use VPC2007 so thanks again for
comments...
