As above really, can I use my XP File & Settings Transfer Wizard data to
import into Vista, or can Vista only use its own wizard's data?

No. Use the Windows Easy Transfer wizard from the Vista dvd in XP to save
your files and settings. Then run it in Vista and complete the transfer.

You can use "Windows Easy Transfer" from Windows Vista to move data from the
old Windows XP computer to the new Windows Vista computer.

Can this be done if the old & new machine are one and the same? I.e. I have
XP on my computer, and want to do a clean install overwriting it with Vista?

Colin has stated it can be run from XP using just the Vista DVD. Sounds
good - please confirm.

Yes. Windows Easy Transfer (for files and settings) works between
partitions on the same computer by using intermediate storage. You run it
in XP from the Vista dvd and then boot into Vista and run it again from
there. Then you install your apps in Vista.

Remember that WET wants to store the files and settings from your computer,
not just your system drive, so set it up carefully. When you boot into
Vista you just tell WET you are using the "new" computer and point the
wizard to the file. You can use a third hard drive, an external hard drive,
or shiny media. You can also write the file to the Vista partition if Vista
is already installed.

There is a WET Companion that should be available for download when Vista
launches that moves applications too, but you will not be able to do that
between partitions on the same computer. It does not have intermediate
storage ability and so can only run live between two computers, the old one
running XP and the new one running Vista. It is for folks who are buying a
new computer with Vista on it and want to transfer the apps from the old
computer without having to reinstall them.
