I am running XP. I'm working on a project with someone who has Vista. We need
to share files. Is it possible?

Certainly, but the real issue is what program with which the files are
created. The operating system doesn't really matter in this context.
IOW, if you are creating files with MS Word 2003 your colleague needs to
have MS Word 2003 or 2007 or another program that can read MS Word 2003
files such as Word Perfect or OpenOffice.

The above is just an example. If you need more help, post back with what
programs you and your colleague are using.

We're working on a PowerPoint presentation. When I try to open her files, I
get a message that says it can't open in PowerPoint. The file extension is
..PPTX.

This has nothing to do with Vista. The .pptx file was created with
PowerPoint 2007, and you probably have an older version. Tell the PP
2007 person to save the file in the older format.

Note that Office 2007 has nothing to do with Windows Vista.

That has nothing to do with Vista vs. WinXP. It means that your
correspondent is using PowerPoint 2007, and you have an older version.
Either ask your correspondent to save the files in an older PowerPoint
format before sending them to you, or download and install the free
conversion utility that Microsoft offers:
