I suppose you are asking if you can utilize Windows XP Home Edition for
professional purposes - in a business.
You can use Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional Edition,
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, Windows XP Media Center Edition, etc in any
way you want.
Same goes for Windows Vista editions and Windows 7 editions.
Essentially - the differences are just the limitations such as those you
have been told about... (Joining a domain, File Encryption, etc.)
