If i upgrade my Xp Media Centre Edition PC to VISTA RC1 will it mean that i
lose all my files and software, because this is something that i cannot
afford to do and I only have one (working - Maxtor suck) hard disk.

This is a pc that i built myself so can take it apart if necessary to put
more disks in, but i need to know that Vista wont decide to erase all my
files and software when it installs itself.

RC1 releases are NOT meant to be used on "production" machines unless you
are prepared to do data backups (which you should be doing anyway),
reformats and re-installs.

Hi sockpuppet
CAUTION!
Are you a betaware tester?
Do you intend to run vista betaware on a test system? or your one and only
one.
Is it a case of 'its new, must have'? - 'got to try that'
Are you technically computer literate to sort any problems caused by having
this betaware on your computer.
Do you know where/how to get help from the vista discussion/newsgroups?
The choice is yours :-)
But go to the proper groups and see for yourself what problems have been
thrown up - ask questions re your intentions.
Then make an informed decision. My apologies if you have done this already.
I built a system two years ago - that's the easy part - a monkey can be
trained to do that - I am the living proof.
But when it comes to OS and software problems, that is another matter.
That's why I will never put any form of betaware on my one and only system.
I wish you luck
Rgds
